Showing Up for Mental Health Awareness

Angelle Bourgeois is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who resides in New Orleans. Her favorite part of being a counselor is that every day is different. No one person has the same story and everyone benefits from different things in therapy. She finds it fascinating to learn what will help each person that she works with. It brings her joy to see when a client makes progress in their journey!

Did you know that May is mental health awareness month? It’s an important time to raise
awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma surrounding mental illnesses, and
promote the importance of mental well-being. Many organizations, advocates, and individuals
use this month to educate the public, offer support, and encourage conversations about mental
health. It’s a great opportunity to learn more about mental health, support those who may be
struggling, and advocate for better mental health care and resources in communities. You may
ask yourself why is mental health awareness important and why it should matter to you? Well, let me tell you, here are several reasons why mental health awareness is important:

Reducing Stigma:
Mental health awareness helps to break down stigma surrounding mental
illness. By promoting understanding and empathy, it encourages people to seek help without
fear of judgment or discrimination.

Encouraging Help-Seeking Behavior:
Awareness campaigns provide information about mental health conditions, symptoms, and available resources, empowering individuals to recognize when they need support and seek help from mental health professionals.

Early Intervention: Increased awareness enables early identification and intervention for
mental health issues. Early detection and treatment can prevent conditions from worsening and improve outcomes for individuals.

Promoting Wellness: Mental health awareness emphasizes the importance of self-care, stress
management, and maintaining overall well-being. It encourages healthy lifestyle choices and
coping strategies to prevent mental health problems before they occur.

Supporting Those Affected: Awareness initiatives create a supportive environment for
individuals living with mental illness and their loved ones. They provide validation, empathy, and resources for those navigating the challenges of mental health conditions.

Improving Access to Care: By raising awareness about mental health issues, communities
can advocate for improved access to mental health services, including affordable treatment
options, support programs, and crisis intervention services.

Addressing Disparities: Mental health awareness efforts aim to address disparities in access
to care and treatment outcomes among different populations, including marginalized
communities, minorities, and underserved groups.

Enhancing Resilience: Awareness campaigns promote resilience-building strategies and
coping skills, empowering individuals to navigate life’s challenges and bounce back from
adversity.

Preventing Suicide: Mental health awareness plays a critical role in suicide prevention by
educating the public about risk factors, warning signs, and available resources for those in
crisis.

Building Supportive Communities: Increased awareness fosters supportive communities
where open conversations about mental health are encouraged, and individuals feel
comfortable seeking help and supporting one another.

Overall, mental health awareness is essential for creating a culture of acceptance,
understanding, and support for mental health issues. By raising awareness and promoting
mental well-being, we can work towards a society where everyone has the opportunity to thrive emotionally, psychologically, and socially. It’s also important to be able to identify warning signs that someone may be struggling. The warning signs include: social withdrawal, changes in mood or behaviors, increased irritability, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, loss of interest, expressions of hopelessness, substance abuse, changes in appetite, and/or thoughts of self harm or suicide.
