As we approach National Stress Awareness Day, the counselors at Neutral Ground Behavioral Health Solutions would like to shed some light on ways in which stress can impact one’s life and how to effectively manage it.

Stress can have a significant impact on a person’s physical and mental health. And interesting enough, it can affect a person of any age. The effects of stress can range from a decline in one’s physical health, by affecting the immune system and leading to heart issues, to affecting one’s mental health, by leading to anxiety and depression.

The impact of stress varies from person to person, but the key is learning to manage it early. As counselors, we work with clients from all ages; who are working to manage stress. This includes students struggling with school related anxiety, parents struggling to balance all of their responsibilities, and those struggling to maintain relationships.

The counselors at Neutral Ground Behavioral Health Solutions work with their clients to help manage their stress with a mix of physical, mental, and emotional strategies. Here are some of the effective strategies:

  1. Physical Activity: We encourage exercise, even something as simple as a walk in the park, yoga, or stretching.
  2. Breathing Exercises: Practicing deep breathing with our clients or mindfulness activities can help reduce anxiety, bring a sense of calm, and help clients gain control.
  3. Time Management: We work with clients to prioritize tasks, create schedules, and set realistic goals to prevent our clients from feeling overwhelmed.
  4. Sleep: Adequate rest is crucial for stress management. Lack of sleep can exacerbate stress, so we work with clients to create realistic sleep routines so they are getting the sleep they need to be successful.
  5. Social Support: Coming to counseling is a social support in itself, but we also help clients to identify those in their circle who can also offer relief and a different perspective.
  6. Healthy Eating: A balanced diet can have a big impact on how stress is managed. Through counseling we help clients to identify the various components that play apart in their stress; including the food they take in. We work with clients to reach attainable goals for favorable outcomes.
  7. Relaxation Techniques: We help clients to establish healthy coping strategies; like yoga, drawing, journaling, or listening to calming music.

Stress can have a major impact on one’s life. It is very important to incorporate strategies to reduce stress. At Neutral Ground Behavioral Health Solutions, we are here to help individuals of all ages who are looking to manage the stress their life.
